Located on Maui’s dramatic and relatively untouched North Shore, Huelo Pt Lookout is ideally situated as a starting point for the legendary ‘Road to Hana’ (a 1 ½ – 2 hour drive). Also to the summit of Mt Haleakala (1 ½ hour drive). Experience these places before the Lahaina/Kihei crowds. The location is perfect for exploring the whole island – only a 20 min drive to Ho’okipa, the home of the famous “Aloha Classic” windsurfing competition and resting place for Maui’s giant green sea-turtles.
From there, a long line of pristine local (i.e. uncrowded) beaches … Mama’s (named after the famous Mama’s Fish House, which has been serving fabulous local cuisine since the 1940’s – be sure to reserve one of their beach view tables early); Pa’ia Bay (bring a boogie-board, or you can wander through fun local boutiques and restaurants in the little surfing town of Pa’ia) Take a sunset strong along Baldwin beach, which seems to stretch forever. Baby Beach, protected by a reef, so ideal for a quick dip … Kanaha (great sunsets). But that’s not all. The upcountry town of Makawao (with its unique local style restaurants and boutiques) is a 30 minute drive and from there it’s an easy journey to the spectacular 10,000’ summit of Mt Haleakala (‘House of the Sun’).
Just because you’re ‘away from it all’ doesn’t mean you can’t experience the big tourist attractions though – it’s only a 45 minute drive to Kihei, 50 – 55 to Wailea/Makena, 90 mins to Lahaina. Maui is a small and intimate island – why not see it ALL? You can do that from Huelo Pt Lookout!
Door of Faith Church Road is one of those eclectic roads in Maui where every resident is a “character”. “Real” people live here … and they’re quite delightful. (Just drive nice and SLOWLY please along our quiet neighborhood road).
We love this area because it has an away-from-it-all feel, yet it’s close enough to 3 small towns (Paia, Haiku, Makawao) to pop in for dinner at a great restaurant or pick up some last minute groceries etc. We’re only 20 mins by car from spectacular ‘local style’ beaches (Ho’okipa is our closest – where you’ll see giant green sea turtles come up in the afternoons to rest on the sand (sometimes beside you!) )
We’re also a great jumping off point for the legendary road-to-Hana, or the trip up to the summit of our 10,000ft dormant volcano, Mt Haleakala (House of the Sun) to see the sunrise (bring warm jackets! Brrr!) This is the side of the island where you come to be ‘in Nature’ rather than be in the midst of hotels, fast food restaurants & crowded beaches! Once you’ve discovered the North Shore of Maui, you’ll be totally hooked.
